Nocturnal sleep study

16-channels polysomnography with EEG

In the laboratory, under supervision of a respiratory therapist, this study examines the sleep recording of several physiological variables such as breathing, sleep stages, muscle tone, heart activity, oxygen level in blood and leg movements. All these parameters are studied to relate each abnormal event that could happen in a night's sleep. This review identifies a range of sleep problem.

  • This exam diagnostic, therapeutic or split nights.
  • Continental breakfast included.

Polysomnography Respiratory simplified 7 channels (Respiratory polygraphy)

A test taken at home with instruction from a respiratory therapist. The recordings will study breathing, cardiac activity and oxygen in the blood and determine the presence or absence of sleep apnea.

Nocturnal oximetry

A test taken at home with instruction from a respiratory therapist. The recordings will study the fluctuations of pulse and oxygen during your sleep.

Polysomnography Is A Diagnostic Test Performed In A Sleep Clinic

polysmnographyPolysomnography is a diagnostic test used to detect a variety of sleep related disorders. On the night of your test, you arrive at the clinic 15 minutes prior to your appointment.  A sleep technologist will greet you and assist you in completing the required paperwork and educate you regarding the testing procedure.

The technologist will apply a variety of electrodes to your body:

  1. Head: measures brain waves to monitor the phases of sleep.
  2. Face: monitors breathing, snoring and eye movements.
  3. Chest: monitors breathing & heart rhythm.
  4. Arms and Legs: to record abnormal movement during sleep.
  5. Finger: to monitor and record blood oxygen levels.

After hook-up, the technologist will calibrate the equipment (with your assistance) and then allow you to watch TV until you are ready to sleep. During sleep, the technologist will collect data and observe you. All information, including video and audio, is digitally recorded. The technologist will note all abnormal observations and keep detailed records of your actions during the night.

In the morning, you will be gently awakened around 6:00 AM. The technologist will remove all equipment and assist you in completing the required post-testing paperwork.  A private shower and a continental breakfast are available for your convenience .

The data will be "scored" by a technologist the same day of your study. During the scoring process, abnormalities are marked and the total number of events totalled.   The results are sent back to your doctor and you should schedule an appointment to discuss the results of your study.
